What affects the cost of furnace and AC work in St. Louis and the Metro East

Heating and cooling quotes can differ by thousands for what looks like the same job. Here's what drives the difference, what to ask, and what to avoid. We don't list prices: the right system depends on your house.

What affects the cost

  • Repair or full replacement
  • System type: gas furnace, heat pump, central AC, boiler or ductless
  • Size, ideally based on a load calculation for your house
  • Efficiency ratings and variable-speed features
  • Ductwork condition and any changes needed
  • Venting changes, including chimney liners for gas equipment
  • Electrical or gas line updates
  • Permits, thermostat, line set and haul-away
  • Brand and warranty length
  • Access in attics, crawl spaces and tight basements

Questions to ask

  • Will you do a load calculation instead of sizing by square footage?
  • Are you licensed where required and insured?
  • What are the exact model numbers and efficiency ratings for each option?
  • Will the indoor coil be replaced to match the outdoor unit?
  • What's included: permit, thermostat, pad, line set and haul-away?
  • What's your labor warranty, and how is the manufacturer warranty registered?
  • Do any current utility rebates or tax incentives apply?

Red flags

  • Sizing the system by square footage alone
  • Pressure to replace without a clear diagnosis
  • Repeated refrigerant top-offs without finding the leak
  • Quotes that don't list model numbers
  • Skipping a permit where one is required
  • "Today only" pricing

Missouri vs. Illinois

  • Neither Missouri nor Illinois licenses HVAC contractors statewide; many cities and counties require local licenses and permits.
  • In Illinois, home repair contractors must carry liability insurance and give you the consumer rights pamphlet.
